The Lenape Indians named it Lake Wallenpaupack “The Stream of Swift and Slow Water”. The land was later owned by William Penn who deeded it to his son who passed it onto to James Wilson, one of the Declaration of Independence signatories. The lake was initially planned to be a safe drinking water reservoir, although this plan was never used for this purpose.

Lake Wallenpaupack was featured as a great location for the setting of Ruth Chew’s Baked Beans for Breakfast book. Oprah’s Autobiography also featured Lake Wallenpaupack in “Somehow I Manage”.
